Weak Cold Front Will Have Little Impact :

Tue, 22 Apr 2008 17:30:56 PDT
A weak cold front moving across the Lower Peninsula between late tonight and the wee hours of Wednesday morning will bring a little cloud cover our way, and likely little else. There is a slight chance for an isolated shower or two across the area, but radar trends indicate the rain associated with the front is rapidly dissipating.

Blogging Grab Bag

Have you heard, today is the Pennsylvania primary? Yes, here we are with yet another “Super Tuesday” like primary…another “must win” for the underdog Clinton, and another opportunity for Obama to show that he can compete in the larger states. I’m really into politics, as should be obvious since I post on a faith-politics website, and this process is getting long even for me. It seems like each state brings a new round of commentators, pundits, and bloggers saying that finally we will have a

The Cliff

Tue, 22 Apr 2008 12:35:01 PDT
There’s an obvious running theme to the posts of the last several days, mostly inspired by discussions about Frank Thomas’ release and whether he would help the Mariners offense. The underlying question essentially boils down to this: “Is Frank Thomas, at age 40, finally just finished as a major league hitter?” I’ve written on this subject, both at Fangraphs and here, as well as talking about it on KJR yesterday. My conclusion is that Thomas is not washed up, and while he’s never going to be th

CBC: It’s a “bungle”! No it’s a “blunder”! Hang on: it’s a “gaffe”!

Fri, 18 Apr 2008 12:50:34 PDT
CBC: It’s a “bungle”! No it’s a “blunder”! Hang on: it’s a “gaffe”! It ain’t good, that’s for sure! Just yesterday I had to update my Monday blog entry because the fair and balanced state-owned CBC Newsworld kept changing its mind about the Conservative government’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Maxime Bernier, and how to officially describe his, um, verbal malfunction. On Monday I showed you how Canada’s cable news networks—the state-owned one and the citizen-owned one against which t

Tokyo Tour: Cleanser, Toner...Placenta?!

Tue, 22 Apr 2008 11:35:16 PDT
A very popular ingredient in Japan (and Asia in general) is placenta. It's been used in beauty products (in the US and worldwide) since the 1940's, but to the non-initiated viewer (me) seeing the term used freely on shelves can be a little shocking--and the idea of spreading it on my face even more so. But the idea does make sense: Placenta is the nourishing lining of the womb, which is expelled after birth. It offers delivers nutrients and oxygen to the infant, and is very rich in nutrients and

Oil up! Freak out! Dow up? Shut up!

Fri, 18 Apr 2008 12:50:34 PDT
Oil up! Freak out! Dow up? Shut up! The state-run media in Canada (and the citizen-owned media who do their best to compete with them) all lament, daily (with intra-day lament updates, all day long), the price of a barrel of oil, and the resulting price of gas. (Of course they don’t have the foggiest clue what they’re talking about, but they pretend they do.) Even as I was writing this, the state-owned CBC did a story about the latest rise in gas prices. A news junkie’s dream …. or nightmare

Wed, 16 Apr 2008 10:46:47 PDT
I am a news junkie and admittedly if I had cable plus the extra TV I would probably have either CNN or CBC Newsworld on the whole time I’m in my room I jokingly call my office. So when I saw Brian Solis’ post about local broadcast news going social I was at first rather skeptical of the the idea; after all everything these days is having the social sticker slapped on its ass like it is going to be the road to instant riches or something. But when I clicked on the LiveNewsComeras.com link (go
